Los Angeles: Pop star Taylor Swift has apologised to Nicki Minaj following the war of words that took place between them over Twitter, claiming that she "misspoke" after thinking she was being "called out".

The spat, which began with Minaj's suggestion that her 'Anaconda' video missed out on a Video Music Award nomination because the music industry celebrates "women with very slim bodies", soon escalated when Taylor Swift assumed these tweets were geared towards her.

"I thought I was being called out. I missed the point, I misunderstood, then misspoke. I'm sorry, Nicki. @NICKIMINAJ," Taylor Swift, 25, posted on Twitter.

Nicki Minaj, 32, rapidly accepted Swift's apology, tweeting, "That means so much Taylor, thank you."

In response to a fan who tweeted that he was glad the pair had made up, Minaj said, "I've always loved her. Everyone makes mistakes. She gained so much more respect from me. Let's move on."

It rift was also picked up by Katy Perry and former CNN host Piers Morgan, both of whom shared their own opinions on the topic.
