Several Hollywood couples broke up thanks to affairs that took place on film sets

In spite of being married to some of the most gorgeous people in the world, not all Hollywood marriages have the perfect fairytale ending. A case in point is the recent split between actors Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith who were married for 18 years.

While working in an industry filled with glitz, it is easy for some celebrities to stray from their significant other. Quite often, in the time actors spend shooting on the set, romance ignites between two co-stars.

This eventually leads to the end of strongest of star couple marriages/relationships. Here, hitlist points out a few of the most scandalous Hollywood break-ups that shocked fans.

Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon

This Cruel Intentions (1999) playboy took his on-screen image a bit too seriously and cheated on wife, actress and co-star, Reese Witherspoon. During the filming for Stop-Loss (2008), Phillippe had an affair with his Australian co-star, Abbie Cornish. The affair barely lasted two years.

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston

In 2005, Brad caused a media frenzy when his marriage of five years with Jennifer Aniston came to an end due to romance with Angelina Jolie during the filming of Mr and Mrs Smith. Although Brangelina is a power couple today, they deny being involved during the making of the film.

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson

Twilight fans were in for a rude shock when reports of Stewart cheating on then-boyfriend Pattinson initially surfaced online. However, the man in question this time wasn't a co-star but Rupert Sanders — the 41-year old director of Kristen's film, Snow White and the Huntsman (2012).

Billy Bob Thornton and Laura Dern

Brad wasn't the first man Angelina Jolie 'stole' from someone else. Regardless of her reputation, the story goes that Billy Bob Thornton and Laura Dern had been together for three years. This was before Billy starred opposite Jolie in Pushing Tin (1999), leading to a three-year-long affair between him and the Oscar-winning Girl, Interrupted (1999) star.

Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith

Banderas and Griffith recently announced the end of their 18-year old marriage. And the tattoo you see on her arm isn't there anymore. The reason for their split is rumoured to be an affair between Banderas and his The Expendables 3 co-star, Natalie Burn. Their secret affair came to light when pictures of them dancing were leaked.

Billy Crudup and Mary Louise Parker

Billy Crudup met Claire Danes on the set of Stage Beauty (2004) and the two actors reportedly had an affair. To his discredit, Crudup was not only married to Mary Louise Parker at the time, but she was also pregnant with his child.

Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid

Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid seemed to be inching towards happily-ever-after until Ryan met the charismatic antipodean Russell Crowe on the sets of Proof of Life (2000). She started dating the New Zealand actor soon after and immediately finalised her divorce from her husband. In her defense, she revealed that Quaid himself had a history of marital philandering, too.

John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer

This was a classic case of cinema seeping into reality. Malkovich played lover to Pfeiffer in Dangerous Liaisons (1988). Their affair was reported to have taken place while Malkovich was still married to actress Glenne Headley and the two later filed for divorce. True to Hollywood, the Malkovich-Pfeiffer romance didn't last long either.
