Los Angeles: Hollywood stars were left shocked and surprised following one of the most bizarre mix-up during the best picture announcement at the 89th Academy Awards.
"La La Land", which won six trophies including best director and actress, was incorrectly declared the best picture winner by Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway at the ceremony.
However, during the their victory speech, the musical's one of the producers, Jordan Horowitz, realised the mistake and announced that the award actually belonged to "Moonlight".
After taking the trophy the director of the film Barry Jenkins tweeted, "Still Speechless". His post was accompanied by the card which read "Moonlight" as the winner of the best picture Academy Award.
Actress Jessica Chastain said she is feeling "sad" for the winning film's team as they were not able to enjoy the moment properly.
"I'm also very sad for the MOONLIGHT crew. I wish that they had the full experience of winning best pic without the awkwardness of it all.
"THANK GOD the wrong envelope didn't happen to an acting prize. Imagine a single teary actor on stage being humiliated.
Stuff of nightmare," she wrote. Neil Patrick Harris, who hosted the Oscars in 2015, labelled the moment as "wierdest".
"What the what what?? What just happened?!? How did Emma Stone's name get in a second envelope? Weirdest. Ending.
Ever." Elizabeth Banks tweeted, "That ending to the #oscars should win best picture next year. #holyshit congrats #moonlight."
Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres said, "Nothing like live TV. Congrats to Moonlight! And to La La Land for such a gracious reaction. #Oscars."
Filmmaker Paul Feig said it is the "craziest" thing he has ever seen. "I'm mean ... I just ... that's the craziest thing I've ever been witness to. Huge congrats to Moonlight, which is fantastic. Wow."
Daniel Kibblesmith tweeted, " Hey "La La Land" remember when you gave us that fake happy ending and then took it away.
"If anyone from the in memorium is still alive please let us know," comedian Billy Eichner joked.
Actor-singer Darren Criss tweeted, "John Travolta just called to congratulate Warren Beatty, as our nation celebrates the peaceful transfer of power btwn biggest Oscar Screwups."
"You know Denzel's asking them to check the tape," Sam Richardson wrote.
Singer Katy Perry was shocked and wrote,"WHAT WAIT OMG". Chloe Grace Moretz called the moment "wild".
Actor-writer Billy Crystal said the goof-up should have happened on the election day.
"Amazing ending. Wish that had happened on Election Day."
Actor-comedian Eric Idle tweeted, "Thanks to the 3 million illegal immigrants who just came across the border from Arizona to vote in our Academy Awards."
"America's next top Model is LaLa. OOPS! I meant Moon," Tyra Banks tweeted.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson said, "Maybe I won an Emmy one of the 5 times I lost! Anything is possible. Congrats to #Moonlight. An amazing and deserving best picture winner!".
