The nominees for the 88th Academy Awards have been announced and 'The Revenant' leads with 12 nominations, followed by 'Mad Max: Fury Road' with 10 and 'The Martian' with seven nods
'The Revenant', the Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer brutal survival drama, is the front-runner at the 88th Oscars after bagging 12 nominations in major categories of best picture, best actor and director while action thriller 'Mad Max: Fury Road' follows closely with 10 nods.

Both the films have been recognised in the best picture category besides Cold War-set 'Bridge of Spies', period romance 'Brooklyn', space adventure 'The Martian', captivity drama 'Room', recession drama 'Big Short' and news drama 'Spotlight'.

'The Martian' has bagged seven nominations while 'Carol' and 'Spotlight' got six each. The nominations were announced today.
The indie drama 'Room' was a one of the biggest surprises.
Leonardo DiCaprio ('The Revenant'), was nominated in the best actor category, as was his co-star Tom Hardy, who received a nod in the supporting actor category. Sylvester Stallone got a best supporting actor nomination for reprising his iconic Rocky Balboa role in 'Creed'.
Based on the true story of 19th century fur trapper Hugh Glass, 'The Revenant' has brought DiCaprio close to the Oscars glory while director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu is back in the game after winning big last year for 'The Birdman'.
Apart from the best picture, best actor for DiCaprio and best director for Inarritu, the movie has bagged nominations for best supporting actor (Tom Hardy), best cinematography, sound editing, costume design, sound mixing, film editing, production design, visual effects and make up and styling.
DiCaprio will fight it out with last year's best actor winner Eddie Redmayne ('The Danish Girl'), Michael Fassbender for 'Steve Jobs', fellow Golden Globe winner Matt Damon 'The Martian' and Bryan Cranston for 'Trumbo'.

The best actress category is being led by double Oscar winner Cate Blanchett 'Carol', actress Brie Larson for 'Room', Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence for biopic 'Joy', Charlotte Rampling for '45 Years' and Saoirse Ronan for 'Brooklyn'.
Earlier, John Krasinski, Guillermo del Toro, Ang Lee and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs took the stage to unveil the nominations for the 88th Academy Awards.
The directors Guillermo del Toro and Ang Lee announced the nominees in the following categories: Animated Feature Film, Cinematography, Costume Design, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Song, Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing.
John Krasinski and Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs took to the stage to unveil the nominations for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Directing, Film Editing, Foreign Language Film, Original Score, Best Picture, Production Design, Visual Effects, Adapted Screenplay and Original Screenplay.
The 88th Academy Awards to be hosted by Chris Rock will be presented at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Centre on February 28.
