A mutual friend introduces the two to each other while the title character is examining what looks like a mummy in a dim-lit room. Holmes tests Watson's reflexes and is satisfied with them.

Watson, meanwhile, lets Holmes know his skills by saying, "I'm an army doctor which means I can break every bone in your body while naming them." The special will premiere January 1, 2016 in both the United Kingdom and the United States.

It will also get a theatrical release in more than 500 theaters in the US and the UK on January 5 and 6. Set in 19th century London, the plot details are still scarce, but executive producer Steven Moffat once said "Ghost stories work better in a Victorian setting. Other than that
it's remarkably similar."

Amanda Abbington, Rupert Graves and Una Stubbs return as Mary Morstan, Inspector Lestrade and Mrs Hudson respectively.
