Missed the Oscars? Here are the highlights

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet

Chris Rock opened the awards night making open digs at the Oscar diversity issue. "Man, I counted at least 15 black people in that montage. I am here hosting at the Academy Awards otherwise known as the White People's Choice Awards. If they nominated hosts, I wouldn't be your host. It'd be Neil Patrick Harris," he quipped.

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu took home the Best Director trophy for the second successive year — the first time in over half a century that a director has won the award back-to-back. He won this year for The Revenant and last year's win was for Birdman.

Leonardo DiCaprio won an Oscar trophy after five previous failed nominations. With Kate Winslet as his arm candy and most of the world rooting for him, he walked away with the Oscar gold as Best Actor for The Revenant. Kate was left teary-eyed when Leo finally won the gong. The actress has often referred to her Titanic (1999) co-star as 'her closest friend in the world', forging one of Hollywood's fondest and most endearing friendships.

In a win that surprised many, Spotlight stole the Best Picture Oscar from crowd favourites, The Revenant (which had 12 nominations) and Mad Max: Fury Road. The winner, announced by Morgan Freeman, was met with gasps from the audience.

Sarah Silverman could take the cake for one of the most awkward on-stage moments in Oscar history. The comedienne was supposed to introduce Sam Smith's live performance, but ended up making strange jokes about James Bond, saying the spy was bad in bed and was not 'a grower or a shower', as the audience members shifted uncomfortably in their seats. The zoned out Silverman also openly declared, "Know what my thing is? Being in front of 80 million people on live TV and saying whatever comes into my mind." We believe you, Sarah.
