US pop star Lady Gaga has revealed that she been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)since being raped at the age of 19. The 30-year-old singer's confession was aired on TV on Monday as part of a segment when she visited a centre for homeless LGBT youth in New York in November.
Gaga tells the group she has a mental illness that she struggles with every day and uses meditation to cope. Her appearance was part of a campaign to inspire kindness. She says kindness that's been shown by doctors, family and friends saved her life.
Until her visit, she'd never spoken publicly about her PTSD. During an interview in 2014, Gaga had first revealed she'd been raped as a teen. She had not spoken about the traumatic episode earlier as she did not want it to "define" her.
