mid-day reporter Aastha Atray Banan points at Bieber's departure from his trademark energy at last night's gig; notably lip syncing, the singer couldn't keep pace with his own tracks

Chris Martin ruined it for Justin Bieber. If that's possible. After we saw the Coldplay frontman rock Bandra's MMRDA Grounds last November, the Canadian hitmaker failed to inspire us last night. It was only the true Beliebers who sang along with gusto, sometimes more than Justin himself managed to. After he half-sang Love Yourself, accompanied by a loud chorus all through, he asked the crowd to clap for themselves.
Here's a breakdown of the hits as they came. The sound was muddy, and harsh. To top it, it seemed Bieber was lip-syncing to most songs. Sometimes he was unable to finish the lyrics or would try to keep pace as a song kicked in before he was ready. The best songs of the evening were Sorry, Company and Where Are You Now.
When he sat down to sing an acoustic version of Love Yourself and Cold Water, he blamed the humidity, taking a moment to tune his guitar mid-way. It's a good thing that his songs are such huge hits. His fans screamed every time they recognised their favourite song. But Bieber, who roamed the stage listlessly with towel around neck, his trademark energy missing, was sapped. We missed Chris Martin, who had run, spun and bopped on stage, getting the crowd charged. Bieber barely moved with his dancers or across the platform. For me, the non-fanatic Bieber listener, it's going to be a while before I consider being a Belieber.
