Wonder what the inspiration behind Cameron choosing Avatar as the title of his new film was? A source close to the filmmaker replies, "According to Hindu philosophy, AVATAR refers to the bodily manifestation of a higher being (deva).

The Sanskrit word literally means "descent" and usually implies a deliberate descent into lower realms of existence for special purposes."

The story
In the film, ex-Marine Jake Sully (Worthington) is enlisted to join the Avatar programme after a planetary mining operation meets resistance from the local aliens. The programme is an initiative where volunteers project their consciousness into hybrid human-alien bodies, or avatars, to walk among the natives.

"In the film, the word 'Avatar' therefore signifies 'a genetically engineered biological body that is remotely operated by a human consciousness'" he adds. On August 28, Indian audiences will get a first look at director James Cameron's motion picture epic AVATAR, when Twentieth Century Fox and Cameron debut the film's trailer.

Extended footage
Also, in an unprecedented move, select cinemas and IMAXu00ae theaters across India will screen extended footage prepared by the renowned filmmaker for this "Avatar Day" event. AVATAR opens in theaters everywhere on December 18, 2009.
