Leading the list on DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs in 2016 inevitably makes 20-year-old Martin Garrix one of the most sought-after international artistes. The Dutch DJ, record producer and musician arrived in India to perform to a full house at Sunburn Arena last week. We caught up with him on the sidelines of his gig to discuss the pressures of being World No. 1, his love for India and why Indian music lovers are special to him.

Edited excerpts from the chat:

Being the world's numero uno DJ puts a lot of pressure on you?
The appreciation means a lot. I will continue doing what I have been doing, so there's no pressure. I am honoured that I get to do what I love while travelling the world. It feels weird to be ranked higher than my idols Tiësto and Calvin Harris, who I have been listening to for years. It's an honour to win something like this at the age of 20.

You have performed in India on multiple occasions. How different is each visit?
India is special. I love the people and the culture. I get so much love and respect every time I come here. Indians are very polite and I enjoy the energy they bring to a party. Every gig is a chance to do something new.

What do you like the most about the country and its people?
It's difficult to handpick a single thing. It's a culturally rich country. The audience is receptive to dance-music and it's growing. It's inspiring to perform in front of so many enthusiastic fans, who always want more. I can keep coming back to this country. I love the food, too.

Are you familiar with Indian musicians?
I listen to Indian music, but I don't know the names of the artistes.

Is there an Indian collaboration in the pipeline?
None as yet.

Currently, who are your favourite EDM artistes?
Tiësto, Calvin Harris and The Chainsmokers.

Tiësto plays an important part in your DJing career, right?
Yes, definitely. I watched him perform during the ceremony of the Olympics. That inspired me to try electronic music. If I hadn't seen that performance, my life would have probably turned out differently.
