PG-13 rating is given to films whose content may be inappropriate for children under 13.

R rating requires viewers under the age of 17 to be accompanied by a parent or an adult guardian.

The anti-hero movie, which features actor Jared Leto's Joker and some other DC villains, received the PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), ahead of its North American release on August 5, reports aceshowbiz.com.

Although the film might not be as wild as the foul-mouthed "Deadpool", it seems to be pushing the limits of the PG-13.

It earned that rating for its "sequences of violence and action throughout, disturbing behaviour, and suggestive content and language".

Ayer said he was aiming for a lower rating despite the movie's dark tone.

"For an R movie, you have to decide to do it right out the gate, and that was never the case here," Ayer said in April.

"We were always going to hit the PG-13 rating. But the film is meant to be that. It's got edge, and it's got attitude. And it's got its own voice... There's a lot in the film that's going to surprise people," he added.
