Double XL star Huma says fashion houses have become inclusive, with their lines for plus-sized people

Style comes in all shapes and sizes

For long, the fashion industry was discriminatory against plus-sized men and women. Their designs reflected the lack of knowledge about women who loved their curves. In the last decade, however, there has been a conscious shift, with many designer labels becoming inclusive and celebrating different body sizes. Huma Qureshi, who is joining forces with Sonakshi Sinha to tackle the subject of body shaming with Double XL, says these mindful steps have given a boost to the dialogue around body positivity.

“When we started promoting Double XL, we wanted to use many homegrown brands that celebrate women of all sizes. To our pleasant surprise, we discovered that leading fashion brands and the niche ones now cater to plus-sized women as well,” she shares.

Earlier, some fashion houses sold their plus-sized outfits at a significantly higher price, citing that they needed additional fabric, thus levying what came to be known as ‘fat tax’. Qureshi is happy to note that such discriminatory practices are steadily being done away with. “The ongoing debate about fat tax has been acknowledged by many, who price the clothes on par with their smaller sizes. This is a fundamental shift towards promoting inclusivity, and I am glad that these small efforts are showing.”
