Having made his singing debut with Sang tere, along with wife Vasuda of Aasma fame, Bollywood production designer Rupin says song is reminiscent of their love story

Celebrity interior designer Rupin Suchak has designed some of the finest sets of Bollywood films, including Ki & Ka, Dear Zindagi and Padman. His foray into music-making, however, is not unlikely. “I’m married to a musician, after all,” he laughs when jumping aboard a conference call along with his wife Vasuda Sharma of Aasma fame. “I’ve loved music all my life, and have always wanted to be on stage.
Vasuda always motivates me. We sing together, and a lot of discussion on music takes place,” says Suchak as he presents Sang tere, his track with Sharma, who was keen to collaborate with Suchak after their parody videos created during the pandemic were well-appreciated. “This heartfelt song is one that I wrote and composed, and he instantly fell in love with. He was like, ‘This is us. This is who we are as a couple.’ That’s when we decided to sing together. I knew that with practice, this could work,” says Sharma.

The practice sessions, however, wouldn’t be as simple as Suchak had anticipated. “She told me I had to be a professional because she wouldn’t be tuning my voice or using any software. Even if she did, she said it would be minimal. On my first trip to scout for locations for a film, I was singing the song everywhere to perfect it. At the time, I was not sure if I’d finally sing, because she said that would depend on how well I performed,” he says of the track that was shot across several picturesque locations.
He credits Sharma’s evolution as a singer-producer for the quality of the numbers. “The way she fuses genres to create new [songs] is amazing. It’s her expertise. I have seen her grow. When she does her riyaaz, she also teaches me, and tells me where to hold back, or [propel my voice].” Ask her if future collaborations will ensue, and Sharma light-heartedly says it “depends on how well he performs”. “He is confident about expressing himself as a vocalist. I’m sure there will be more to come.”
