As Sharmaji Namkeen drops online, Ranbir on lessons he learnt from dad Rishi Kapoor

Those who have seen Amazon Prime Video’s recent offering, Sharmaji Namkeen, will agree that its biggest strength is its charming lead actor, the late Rishi Kapoor. Director Hitesh Bhatia’s slice-of-life film again proved what the past few years had shown us — that the senior actor had blossomed in his second innings, at last finding subjects that were worthy of his craft. Ranbir Kapoor, who naturally holds Rishi’s swansong close to his heart, is overwhelmed by the audiences’ love for his father’s final act. Asked whether the senior Kapoor shared acting tips with him, Ranbir says, “My father rightfully believed that [every] actor has to find his own way. You have to learn from your mistakes, and develop your own skill set.”

The late actor’s strength was his spontaneity in front of the camera, a trait that Ranbir has inherited. He adds, “[An artiste should] try to be spontaneous and excited; he should not become jaded as the years go by. My father constantly reinvented himself. I have secretly imbibed from him his passion, and his belief that it’s all about the process and not the result.”
