Adipurush still

After a dismal run at the box office, Om Raut-directorial 'Adipurush' is now streaming on Netflix and Prime. The film starring Prabhas as Lord Ram, Kriti Sanon as Sita, Sunny Singh as Laxman, and Saif Ali Khan as Raavan was released in theatres on June 16. After nearly 2 months of its theatrical release, the film has hit OTT platforms.

As soon as the film was made available on OTT platforms on August 11, 'Adipurush' started trending on social media. "While serving a long exile, a righteous warrior prince sets out on an epic journey across land and sea to rescue his wife from a demon king," reads the description of the film on Netflix.

While the anticipation around the film was high before its theatrical release, it came crashing down post release as audience reactions started to come in through social media. Many called the script and VFX sub-par. However, it was the dialogues that left many in shock terming it cringeworthy. People had called Lord Hanuman's lines in the film 'disrespectful'. A particular dialogue that received severe backlash is when Devdatta Nage as Lord Hanuman says, “Kapda tere baap ka, aag tere baap ki, tel tere baap ka, jalegi bhi teri baap ki”.  Post the backlash, the dialogue was modified to better suit the image of Lord Hanuman and the tone of the Ramayana.

As per a report in Sacnilk, the film raked in Rs 220 crore in India and Rs 340 crore worldwide over the weekend. It earned Rs 86 crore on Friday, Rs 65 crore on Saturday and Rs 69 crore on Sunday, but took a nosedive on its first Monday.

Recently, actor Vatsal Sheth who played the role of Indrajit, son of Ravana, in the film addressed the failure of the film. “It is very upsetting,” he said reacting to the failure of 'Adipurush' for the first time since its release. “For Adipurush, I put in a lot of effort that I have not put in any of my films or projects to date. I had grown a beard, I had done workshops,” he said talking to mid-day.com

“The director had a specific vision for this film and we all went by it. I did not take up any projects during that time. I worked out because he wanted the character of Indrajit in a certain way,” he added saying that the reviews were bad but there was a lot of negativity around the film.

“There was so much negativity around the film that a lot of people did not go and watch it including my close relatives. They assumed that jaayenge toh maar peet hoga. I was like let people decide whether they like it or not. You can’t create this (negativity) around a film. There were issues, but the team accepted them, and it was changed. But there is so much effort that goes into making a film and so many people working hard on it and is just very very heartbreaking. But again that's life,” he added.
