Learning martial arts for Devotion of Suspect X, Vijay on working with the “mad genius” Sujoy Ghosh
Vijay Varma
It has not been a cakewalk to the limelight for Vijay Varma. After making blink-and-miss roles for seven years, Ranveer Singh’s Gully Boy (2019) got people to sit up and take notice of the actor. Revelling in his new-found fame, Varma has come on board to play a pivotal role in Sujoy Ghosh’s Devotion of Suspect X. “We are all neck-deep in prep now,” says the actor, adding that he is “happy to escape the Mumbai summer” as they will soon head to Darjeeling for a two-week schedule.

Collaborating with the filmmaker for the first time, Varma can’t stop singing praise of the “funny man” Ghosh. “Sujoy is a mad, mad genius. He is incredibly fun to work with. I want to share laughter and joy, while creating something incredible with him,” he says and adds that he has been busy prepping for the film. “For the last few months, I have been silently learning martial arts [for the role] and changing my form a bit. It is hard, but it has also been a childhood dream to kick like Bruce Lee once.”
The Netflix film is an adaptation of Japanese author Keigo Higashino’s bestseller of the same name. It revolves around a single mother who accidentally kills her ex-husband and then tries to cover it up with the help of her neighbour.
