Manipur has been witnessing violence since May 3, following the protests by the Kuki and Naga communities against the High Court's order asking the state government to consider the inclusion of the Meitei community in the category of Scheduled Tribes (ST). Only STs can buy lands in hilly areas. A video of 2 women being paraded naked in strike-torn Manipur has left citizens in shock. Several politicians have condemned the act of violence against women in the state and have asked for strict actions against the culprit. Earlier, actors Akshay Kumar, Urmila Matondkar and Sonu Sood had also condemned the same. Now, Jaya Bachchan, the actress and Rajya Sabha member has also responded to the violence.

Jaya Bachchan found the video to be utterly shameful and distressing, and she revealed that she couldn't bear to watch the entire footage due to the overwhelming feeling of shame it evoked. She spoke to news agency ANI in Hindi, stating that this horrific incident took place in May, but it had only gained traction after going viral. Despite the gravity of the situation, she pointed out the lack of sympathy from others regarding this incident, emphasizing that it highlights the issue of women's safety.

In her frustration, Jaya Bachchan expressed her disappointment with how the plight of women is often overlooked or overshadowed. She criticized the trivialization of women's safety by citing examples like claiming to have included 50 percent women in a panel, as if it can compensate for the prevailing issues. The distressing nature of the Manipur incident left her feeling deeply concerned for the state of women's rights in the country.

The majority of the Meitei community, which occupies the Imphal Valley and nearby areas, sought the ST status keeping in view their increasing population and increased requirement of land so that they could purchase lands in the hilly areas. The government has planned heavy legislative business for the monsoon session of Parliament beginning Thursday with Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023, among 31 bills on its agenda.

The monsoon session of Parliament will continue till August 11. There will be a total of 17 sittings during the session. It will commence in the old Parliament Building.
