I can’t be put in box: Radhika Madan

Radhika Madan is hungrier than ever before. Her absence from the big screen in 2022 shouldn’t be misconstrued for a dearth of offers; Madan had a choc-a-block schedule filming six projects, all of which will be unveiled this year. “I have a fire in my belly, which is growing with every project. I want to keep proving myself with each film. I want to show the world that I can’t be put in a box,” says the actor, who begins the year with the release of Kuttey, also starring Arjun Kapoor

The black comedy features an ensemble cast including Tabu, Naseeruddin Shah, Konkona Sensharma and Kumud Mishra, and marks the directorial debut of Vishal Bhardwaj’s son, Aasmaan. Having shared a bond with Aasmaan, who served as a supervisor on her previous film, Pataakha, Madan also proved to be a protective kin to the director on the set. “Usually, an actor is hired to do the job, and leave the set. But, here, I wanted the film to be great because Aasmaan is making it. I gave every ounce of myself to this film because I wanted to make it right for Aasmaan. That was the only thing on my mind. It was quite a revelation to see him be so good at his job,” she says of the offering that releases on January 13.

Although an outsider in the industry, Madan has found a family of sorts in the Bhardwajs, and the other directors, including Vasan Bala and Homi Adjania, who she has previously collaborated with. “I feel fortunate that these people have trusted me time and again. Each time that they cast me, it raises the stakes. When I began my journey in the industry, the only way I could win their hearts was by giving each film my all. That is how I have looked at my career as well. I don’t have any connections here. I can’t be lackadaisical towards the bonds that I have formed. I dreamt big, and people called me crazy. I have worked way too hard to take things for granted.”
