Shashi Tharoor has congratulated Gulzar for receiving the Jnanpith Award, India's highest literary honour, for his lifetime achievements in Urdu poetry. Tharoor praised Gulzar for his exceptional contributions to Urdu poetry, stating that the award was well-deserved. Kangana Ranaut also extended her congratulations on Instagram Stories.

The Jnanpith Award, presented by Bharatiya Jnanpith, recognizes outstanding contributions to literature. Shashi Tharoor tweeted his warmest congratulations to Gulzar. He tweeted, “Warmest congratulations to Gulzar Sahib on winning India’s highest literary award for lifetime achievement, the Jnanpith Award, for his extraordinary services to Urdu poetry. Richly deserved! One of those rare accolades applauded both by the general public and the cognoscenti.”


Kangana Ranaut shared a photo of Gulzar and Jagadguru Rambhadracharya, another recipient of the award, expressing her heartfelt congratulations on winning the Jnanpith Award. She shared, “Jnanpith puraskar ke liye hardik shubhkamnaye (Congratulations on winning Jnanpith Award).”

Gulzar, also known as Sampooran Singh Kalra, is a respected figure in Hindi cinema and a loved Urdu poet. Alongside Jagadguru Rambhadracharya, he was named a recipient of the 58th Jnanpith Award for 2023. In a statement, the Jnanpith selection committee said, "It has been decided to give the award (for 2023) to eminent writers from two languages: Sanskrit litterateur Jagadguru Rambhadracharya and well-known Urdu litterateur Shri Gulzar."

About Gulzar's honours

Gulzar has been honoured with several prestigious awards throughout his career. In 2002, he received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his contributions to Urdu literature. In 2013, he was bestowed with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, a significant recognition in the world of Indian cinema. Adding to his list of accolades, Gulzar was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2004, a high civilian honour in India. Notably, he has clinched at least five National Film Awards for his exceptional work in the film industry.

Among his notable achievements is the creation of the song "Jai Ho" for the movie Slumdog Millionaire, which not only secured an Oscar in 2009 but also earned him a Grammy Award in 2010. Gulzar's musical prowess extends to critically acclaimed films such as Maachis (1996), Omkara (2006), Dil Se (1998), and Guru (2007), showcasing his ability to leave a lasting impact with his compositions.

In addition to his musical contributions, Gulzar has ventured into filmmaking and directed award-winning classics like Koshish (1972), Parichay (1972), Mausam (1975), Ijaazat (1977), and the television serial Mirza Ghalib (1988).
