Veteran actress Dimple Kapadia who celebrates her birthday on June 8 marked her acting debut as a teenager in the 1973 romantic movie 'Bobby' starring Rishi Kapoor. She was born in Mumbai to a Gujarati businessman Chunibhai Kapadia and his wife Bitti, known as 'Betty'.  Over the years, she has acted in several successful films during her career. Some of her notable works include 'Saagar', 'Ram Lakhan', and 'Batwara', 'Rudaali', among others. However, off lately, she has been headlining a series of unconventional roles breaking stereotypes the way veteran female actors are portrayed on screen. Here are some of our best picks. 


A Thursday



'A Thursday', a movie starring Yami Gautam, Neha Dhupia, Dimple Kapadia, and Atul Kulkarni, was released in 2022. Dimple, who plays Prime Minister Maya Rajguru, garnered a lot of positive feedback for her outstanding performance.

Tandav

The actress's first web series, 'Tandav' (2021), had a striking impact. Her portrayal of a vengeful politician aiming to discredit a rival in the role showcased just how talented an actor she is. 

Tenet

Not just in Bollywood, she has also made a mark in Hollywood with her amazing performance in the legendary director Christopher Nolan's thriller film 'Tenet' where she played an arms dealer. Written and directed by Nolan, 'Tenet' stars John David Washington as a spy who is tasked with a mission to prevent a global war that sees him learn to manipulate the flow of time. The film involves a concept called inversion, which is said to be a sort of communication with the future.

Pathaan

Helmed by Siddharth Anand, 'Pathaan' is an action-packed spy-thriller featuring Shah Rukh Khan, John Abraham, and Deepika Padukone in lead roles. Dimple played the role of a senior officer named Nandini Grewal who recruits Pathaan. 

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya

In 'Teri Baaton Mein Aise Uljha Jiya,' Shahid Kapoor plays a robotics engineer who develops feelings and finally marries Kriti Sanon's character, Sifra, an AI (Artificial Intelligence) female robot. The movie explores an impossible love story in the uncharted territories of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Dimple plays the role of Urmila Shukla, who has a company of her own, E-Robotics, in California and is the one who designs Sifra.

Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo

Dimple also proved what a remarkable actor she is with her portrayal of a strong-headed matriarch in the web series 'Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo'. The series is billed as a new spin on the 'saas-bahu' drama sub-genre that generally explores the power dynamics between tough, ruthless mothers-in-law and meeker daughters-in-law.

Murder Mubarak

In the murder mystery titled ‘Murder Mubarak', Dimple essayed the role of Cookie Katoch an alcoholic sculptor living at the Royal Delhi Club, where a series of strange events disrupt the peace and tranquillity of an elite club. The film featured an ensemble cast and was directed by Homi Adajania.
