Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha received polarised response when it opened at the box office on August 11, 2022. It was the official Hindi remake of Tom Hanks' Hollywood classic, Forrest Gump. Aamir played the role of a person with an IQ of 75 and Kareena was his ladylove. While a section of people loved his performance in Laal Singh Chaddha, SS Rajamouli found it 'overacting'.

In an interview with PTI, Aamir's cousin and director Mansoor Khan said, "Aamir has a great sense of humour. So one day he laughingly tells me, ‘When you told me it was over the top, I said, ok, you are a subtle guy which is why you might have felt that way. But when someone like Rajamouli tells me overacting lag raha hai, I said to myself, Isko bhi lag raha hai toh kiya hi hoga (If he also feels so than it must be)’."
He further added, “I liked the script (of Laal Singh Chaddha). I think writer Atul Kulkarni did a fine job of it. Yes, Aamir, I believe, went over the top with his expressions. I mean the character is not a jerk, not someone suffering with dyslexia or anything else. He is a bit odd … but that’s about it."
Mansoor also shared, “I loved Tom Hanks in the original (Forrest Gump), he was so minimal with his expressions and portrayal of the character. Of course, I did tell this to Aamir."
Laal Singh Chaddha was directed by Advait Chandan. The film also starred Mona Singh and Naga Chaitanya in important roles. At the box office, it failed to meet expectations and tanked. Laal Singh Chaddha clashed with Akshay Kumar's Raksha Bandhan, which was also a box-office failure.
After the failure of Laal Singh Chaddha, Aamir announced a break from acting for a couple of months. He stepped out of the remake of Champions. In a statement at an event, he said, "When I am doing a film as an actor, I get so lost in that and nothing else happens in my life. Which is why I decided to take a break. "I was supposed to do a film called 'Champions' after 'Laal Singh...' It's a wonderful script, a beautiful story. It's a very heartwarming and lovely film but I feel like I want to take a break. I want to be with my family, with my mom, with my kids."
