Tyson had a troubled childhood. His father abandoned his family when he was two and then his mother Smith died when he was 16 leaving him in the care of boxing manager and trainer Cus D'Amato.
Mike throughout his childhood stayed in an area where the crime rate was high. He was repeatedly caught committing petty crimes and fighting those who ridiculed his high-pitched voice and lisp. By the age of 13, he had been arrested 38 times.

In 1992, Tyson was convicted of sexually assaulting Desiree Washington, for which he served three years in prison.
