Netflix will being the fresh pairing of R Madhavan and Surveen Chawla to screen with Decoupled, the story of a couple that has decided to part ways. The storyline can be deceiving in establishing the nature of the offering, a comedy that composer Rachita Arora describes as “neither loud nor animated”.

“Working for a comedy poses its own challenges. This project needed a different approach. When you have a comic scene unfolding on screen, you don’t require overpowering music to establish that it is meant to be funny. In fact, an over-powering soundtrack may [ruin] the experience,” says the young composer, who has worked on films like Ayushmann Khurrana’s Shubh Manga Saavdhan (2017), and Newton (2017), starring Rajkummar Rao.

To bring director Hardik Mehta’s next venture to life, Arora says she employed jazz, blues and brass to create a sensual soundtrack. “The fact that this film is also emotional, and sees people walk in and out of the screen often in fast-changing scenes, made the process a tad [tougher].”  Decoupled — which marks Arora’s second collaboration with Mehta after Kaamyaab —  will release on December 17.
