Veteran actor Sumita Sanyal passed away at her Kolkata residence yesterday. She was 71 and was married to film editor Subodh Roy.
The actress's family said she had been suffering from age-related ailments for a while.
Sanyal is best remembered for her roles in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Anand (1970), alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Satyajit Ray's Nayak (1966), Gulzar's Mere Apne (1971) and Guddi (1971).
She mesmerised the Bengali audience with her stints in films like Kuheli (1971) by Tarun Majumdar and Sagina Mahato (1970), directed by Tapan Sinha.
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee condoled her death on Twitter, writing: "Saddened at the passing away of veteran actress Sumita Sanyal. My condolences to her family, friends and fans."
Actor Prosenjit Chatterjee also took to the platform to write: "Saddened to hear about the demise of the veteran actress Sumita Sanyal. May her soul rest in peace."
