Shruti Haasan has bowed out of the multilingual period drama, Sangamithra. She had unveiled the film at the Cannes Film Festival barely a week ago along with director Sundar C, music composer AR Rahman, and co-actors Jayam Ravi and Arya.

Last evening, the producers, Sri Thenandal Films, announced on Twitter, "Due to unavoidable circumstances, we are unable to proceed working with Shruti Haasan in Sangamithra."

The first look of Shruti as the titular warrior queen was released at the French Riveira, with the makers claiming that international studios had expressed interest to co-produce the film. Shruti had been cast from among several leading South actresses and in April, underwent training in martial arts in London as part of her prep.

Shruti's spokesperson says, "She was to take a call [on the film] since she was yet to receive a proper bound script and a calendar for the shoot. Knowing it was a massive undertaking and a long commitment spanning two years, it was important for her to know those details."

The actress is currently promoting her upcoming Bollywood film, Behen Hogi Teri, which has Rajkummar Rao as her co-star.
