Shake a leg with Terence

Getting chiggy-wiggy with this boy is every wannabe dancer's dream. His students can vouch for it. These days choreographer Terence Lewis is busy training his students' for a contemporary dance show for the graduation day at his dance academy. We caught up with him to know more his passion:

This performance is set up by my students who are graduating from the three-year diploma in contemporary dance. All of them are presenting different stories through their danceu00a0- one is a hustler at Churchgate station while one girl is telling the story of being ditched at the marriage altar, while one's portraying the character of a narcoplexy patient. In the end, all these stories come together to form a single sequence. The whole show has been conceived and choreographed by them with some inputs from me. Their training began from last year, and we have been doing rigorous practice for past three months. We dance for almost ten hours daily.

Contemporary dance
This form of dance is more independent, individualistic and creative than others. It's also very organic as it allows the dancer to interpret a theme in his/her manner by using the body as a means of expression. In contemporary, a dancer has to create a picture or present a theme through his body movements. The use of facial expressions is minimal. Contemporary is very popular in the US, Germany, Austria, etc. People aspiring to learn this form of dance need to train really hard and take proper coaching as the technique is paramount. It also requires a high degree of fitness.u00a0

The What's Your Rashee experience
Working with Ashutosh Gowarikar after Lagaan was a wonderful experience. I have done the title song 'What's Your Rashee' and 'Dhadkan Dhadkan'. Priyanka and Harman are quick learners so it was a pleasure to work with them. I have also done the choreography for a dance sequence for an English film 'Hex Lily 2', which is being produced by Blue Ice Films and Walt Disney.
