Rush: Criminally boring

Bad news is good news. And nothing sells like crime. Considering that murder and mayhem always grab headlines, the film’s premise is extremely plausible but its execution far from exciting. Things just happen, songs are thrown in (back-to-back), some make-believe follows with an end that is as predictable as in any B-Town potboiler.

Emraan Hashmi essays a television crime reporter who always manages to obtain the best stories. This includes bribing his sources to gain access to the criminals. He lands in trouble when he interviews a sharpshooter (Murli Sharma who has his moments) who blurts out the names of an industrialist he has struck. This is Emraan’s big moment but flashing the businessman’s name on the channel lands him in a soup. The cops tail him to reveal the identity of the sharpshooter while the channel is forced to state it was a false story due to the demands of the powers that be. This leads to his downfall as well as of the going-ons.

As one of the dialogues goes “Jo rakshas ka shikar karte hain woh khud rakshas ban jaata hai.” Enter a rival channel head (Aditya Panscholi) and his Woman Friday (Neha Dhupia) who believe that you ‘create’ news when it is not happening. So you bump off people, tap the phones of cops and be the first to air the news. That’s how you remain at the top of the heap in the viewership ratings. It does not take long for Emraan to join them. He thinks he can give his artist fiancée (Sagarika) a good life. And it takes an equally short time to make him realise the true story behind the big story.

The late director Shamin Desai may have shot this film some years ago and all those associated with it were keen to make it see the light of day. The efforts are laudable. The film does not look jaded because of the subject --- crime. But with some unnecessary songs it meanders just like its setting which travels from New Delhi to Kuala Lumpur and even Goa. Emraan does what he has to do including those mandatory liplocks with his heroines – Sagarika who spends a good time sulking and Neha who seems to have put in a lot of attention to go ruthless in her designer togs.

Rush could have given an adrenaline rush had it got its facts right. And any crime reporter could have helped.
