Chadha has written to the chief minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, to seek the office's intervention in ensuring that the number of elephant deaths related to negligence are monitored. The development comes in the wake of reports of the death of the animal in train accidents on tracks that pass through heavily forested regions.
Chadha says she was instantly on board when PETA approached her for the campaign. "We need to teach our train drivers about [being watchful of] elephants crossing [tracks]. The forest guards should put up signs at stations warning drivers about upcoming crossings," she says. After Odisha, the campaign is expected to travel to other places.
