Dil has been manipulated, exchanged and also made to do some unwittingly hilarious things in the name of medical miracles. So the theme of Shekhar Suman’s directorial debut, Heartless, is no novelty. But what sets this film apart is that it talks of another medical phenomenon, anaesthesia awareness, a rare condition where a patient can hear and feel the pain even when under the influence of anaesthesia, but can’t react to his surroundings.
Aditya Singh (Adhyayan Suman) has a weak heart and his mother, Gayatri Singh (Deepti Naval) is very keen to get him a healthy heart and she wants the operation to be done by the best surgeon in the country, Dr. Trehan (Om Puri). In the meanwhile, Aditya falls in love with Riya (Ariana Ayam) and gets married to her, and he also chooses a friend, Dr. Saxena (Shekhar Suman) to operate on him, in spite of his mother’s displeasure over it. Soon after, Aditya goes in for a heart transplant operation and the unthinkable happens while he’s on the operating table.
A lot of Hindi films are known to keep you hooked in the first half but they fail in the second half. Heartless works the other way around. In the first half, the story meanders and moves ahead at a painfully slow pace as it talks about Aditya and his relationship with his mother and shows him wooing a girl he fancies at a Dubai hotel. It gets progressively boring and repetitive towards the interval. However, in the second half — just when you are about to give up on the film — it picks up pace.
Adhyayan puts in an earnest performance. Newcomer Ariana Ayam, as Adhyayan’s love interest, is disappointing though. Shekhar Suman’s charm is intact but the film definitely belongs to Deepti Naval, who puts her heart and soul into her role of a doting mother capable of any sacrifice.
The movie has an interesting premise but a better execution would have been welcome. Also, a little more logic in the storyline would have helped the film.
