Mori moment

For all of us who saw Kites, we couldn't help observing that actor Barbara Mori smiled through a good 80 per cent of the film. Well she's just the same in real life. She even smiled her way through cancer. The actor, who will soon be seen in a docudrama on cancer, 1 a Minute, talks to CS about how the much-dreaded C-word changed her life:

The big fight
When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer, my first reaction was: Is this really happening to me? I was shocked and at the same time terrified. I thought this was the end, but then I realised that I had to fight this battle and move on with my life. Ever since, my attitude towards life has totally changed. I have learnt to value everything that life has to offer.

And now I have turned into an enthusiastic activist for this cause. Through my film, I want to let the whole world know that anyone, rich or poor, can be hit by the bug; but if detected earlier, it can be cured as well. So, the importance of periodic routine check-ups is crucial.

Life is beautiful
Yes, staying strong through this excruciating fight is an ordeal, but it isn't impossible. The support from family and friends helped me stay positive. Cancer made me a stronger person and put things in perspective for me. It made me understand the world around me -- I guess when you're fighting death, you understand life better.
