Johnny Lever does not step out of his home without reading the Bible. The holy book also accompanies the actor everywhere, including on the sets.
Not many know that the master of mimicry underwent a life-altering experience in the last few years that made him seek solace in prayer. His young son Jesse was diagnosed with a malignant tumour in his neck.

Praying for help
Though he was advised surgery, it could lead to several complications. It was during this time that Johnny turned to the Bible and to prayers to help his child battle cancer.
"The incident changed my life," admits B-Town's comedian. "I begin my day reading the Bible. It is there with me always. I keep on reading even in the make-up van between shots."
He believes that his son was put on the road to recovery because of a miracle. "You keep on doing several things in life and then suddenly something happens to you that spiritually awakens you.
It was like a bolt from the blue when he was first diagnosed. It has been a long process but my son has been cured due to the power of everyone's prayers. When Jesse was ailing we had sent prayer requests to several churches."
Says Johnny, "Jesse is absolutely fine now, by the grace of God. He is in his first year at Jaihind College. That ordeal is the past now."

He has a daughter Jamie, who also studies at Jaihind.
The actor now conducts prayer services at home and is also part of the New Life Fellowship ministry. "I want to share my experiences with others and relate to them the power of healing through prayer."
This is also the reason why he is taking it easy on the work front. "At this point of my life, I want to do things at my own pace. I do stage shows and do have my share of films.
Several of my appearances for the small screen still come as repeats (Comedy Circus, for example). I am thankful for what I have got. There is no rush for anything now."
