Designer Nikhil Thampi suggests that Sabyasachi Mukherjee might have bullied his way into designing the wardrobe for Vidya Balan's Cannes trip
The fashion police have been screaming themselves hoarse, slamming Vidya Balan for her ‘queer’ choice of clothes at the Cannes Film Festival.

While some criticised her for her ashen make-up and severe hairstyles, others went tut-tut about her sometimes boring, sometimes overtly dramatic Sabyasachi attires. Now it appears that there is a twist in the tale. Designer Nikhil Thampi says he was also approached to create a couple of outfits for Vidya’s red carpet appearances. However, sources say that Sabya threw his weight around and apparently even threatened to stage a walk-out on his plan to dress the actress for the French Riviera.
Nikhil recently styled the actress for a shoot in a fashion magazine. The designer says based on that look an eccentric mix of black and white he was offered to collaborate with Vidya for the prestigious film event. Says the Mumbai-based designer, “It was post the magazine spread that I was approached and appreciated for getting a new side to Vidya. Knowing the fact she was a jury member, I was then asked to construct two-three looks. But at the last minute, it took a different route which I wasn't aware of.”
If rumours are to be believed, it was apparently the Kolkata-based couturier who put his foot down. An industry insider points out, “We all know that he is Vidya’s favourite designer and it was but obvious that he was going to style her for the big event. After the magazine hit the stands, there were speculations that Nikhil would be considered too.” Sabya, however, refutes the allegations and states, “Vidya and I have a great relationship and I don't ever seek to monopolise her. She approached me for Cannes. I never stop her from wearing anyone else's clothes. You should clarify with her directly.”u00a0
