Garth Davis' emotional tale, Lion, and Mel Gibson's intense drama, Hacksaw Ridge, about an unlikely war hero, are among nine nominees for the top prize at the 89th Acadamy Awards. The Dev Patel-starrer sees the actor in the role of an Indian boy who gets lost on a train while scrounging for food and gets adopted by an Australian family.

The 26-year-old, who has been nominated for the Best Supporting Actor category, claimed to have visited several orphanages to prep for his role. His co-star, Nicole Kidman bagged the nod for Best Supporting Actress as well. Lion also bagged nominations for Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Score and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Damien Chazelle's neo-musical La La Land, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stones bagged 14 nominations, bringing it at par with Titanic and All About Eve for the most Academy Award norms in history. The academy also moved past two #OscarsSoWhite years by honoring six black actors and including diverse films like Moonlight, Fences and Hidden Figures in the best picture race.

Nine movies will compete for Hollywood's top prize, including several box-office hits. Denis Villeneuve's Arrival emerged as one of the most-honored films, with norms in eight categories. But, Amy Adams, failed to receive a nod for best actress. Instead, her slot likely went to the newcomer Ruth Negga for her performance in Loving.
