I have three daughters and I am always worried about their safety in this country," says Daler Mehndi, at the outset, indicating that it was as much the father in him as the musician that prompted the creation of his latest track. His label, D Records, is set to release a song on the need to save the girl child this International Women's Day (March 8). Titled Gudiya Rani, the track has been composed and sung by YouTuber Udit Shandilya. With over 26,000 subscribers, Shandilya is popular for his covers of old Bollywood songs.
"It was my wife, Taran Kaur Mehndi's idea to utilise our label to nurture new talent. I feel proud that our first offering is a track that highlights the importance of cherishing the girl child. When we heard Udit's song, we thought it suited our vision," says Mehndi.
As a father to three daughters, the song resonated with him. Revealing that his children are musically inclined, he says the trio inspires him as an artiste. "My youngest daughter, Rabaab, debuted with me when she was only a year old with the song, Baba Nanak Mere Naal Naal. I recently recorded a song that was composed by her a year ago," he beams with pride, adding that his eldest daughter Ajit is trained in Indian and western music. "Prabhjot [his second daughter] is studying psychology and she writes poetry. I am certain that my daughters will serve the world with their talent."
While he is currently working on his next — a Sufi album, Mehndi is hands-on when it comes to his label. In what is his way of giving back to the industry that has showered so much love on him, the Punjabi pop star wants his label to act as a launch pad for new singers.
"Making a mark in the industry is a tough job. It's helpful when someone holds your hand and guides you in the right direction. We are dedicated towards showcasing young artistes and releasing songs with social messages. Our next song will be about the ill-effects of substance abuse," says Mehndi, who is also backing Stutee Tiwari's album and YouTube sensation Acoustic Singh's debut single.
