What's it about: Essentially a story of self-discovery, Brick Lane follows Nazneen (Tannishtha) from her village in Bangladesh to London's Banglatown. Married off at 17 to Chanu (Kaushik), a podgy guy roughly 20 years her senior, she lives closeted, insulated from the outside world until circumstances force her outside Brick Lane, where she resides.

What's hot: It takes guts to take something as commonplace as an arranged marriage and use it to get the story going. Then again, this film was meant to give a peek into the windows of a world one isn't usually allowed into.
Tannishtha as Nazneen plays the role with remarkable restraint, enduring a lifetime of dreams she could never live. Satish Kaushik excels in a role that could just as easily be campy. The film has been beautifully shot.
What's not: Having grown up through the '80s, one remembers TV shows like Tandoori Nights, that were far more authentic to the immigrant experience than this adaptation that has very little to offer in terms of novelty.
What to do: Coming three years late, the film is a limited release. Watch it, if only for the lead pair.
