Notwithstanding acclaim for her Rangoon act, Kangana Ranaut's dream run at the box-office suffered a setback with her latest outing collecting a mere Rs 18.25 crore in its opening weekend. The Vishal Bhardwaj-directed period drama had received average reviews, and poor word of mouth buzz made a dent in its business.
Given the lacklustre performance, trade pundits feel it is unlikely that the film will pass the crucial Monday test and redeem itself through the week.
Trade analyst Komal Nahta says, "The entire weekend collection should ideally have been first day numbers. The music and trailer had failed to pique the audience's curiosity. It's a big disaster."
Distributor-exhibitor Akshaye Rathi points out that recovery is all the more difficult since the film is made on a huge budget — reportedly R80 crore. "One needs to understand that one can't make a micro niche film on a universal budget. I think it's high time filmmakers did the math before making a film," he adds.
