Ali Abbas Zafar's film 'Gunday' has collected around Rs 42 crore in the first weekend of its release. The film, which is hailed as an ode to Yash Chopra and is set against the backdrop of the coalmine mafia of the '70s, had a decent opening on Friday with the first day business amounting to Rs 14.5 crore.

Trade analyst Amod Mehra says, "The film opened well but it had mixed reviews which affected the business on Saturday. Sunday, however, was better than Friday. Moreover, it is a fairly priced film, so it is bound to do well."
The film, that stars Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, also ate into box office earnings of 'Hasee Toh Phasee' on Friday. Vishal Anand of Fun Cinemas says, "Gunday’s collection on Friday was 25 per cent more than Saturday’s and this is mainly because of Valentine's Day celebrations. In the past 10 days, 90 per cent of our business has come from these two films."
Exhibitor Rajesh Thadani says that Hasee Toh Phasee, actor Sidharth Malhotra’s solo release with debutant director Vinil Mathew, has done a decent business at the BO. "The film has collected around Rs 35 crore in the first 10 days of its release. With audiences preferring Gunday over it, there was a drop in the business on Monday. Now we have to wait and see if the film is able to sustain itself at the box office."
