What's it about: You don't need to know what a boeuf bourguignon is, or how to bone a duck, to enjoy this light scrumptious delicacy. Based on true events, Julie and Julia is the story of a world-renowned cook who changed the way American housewives looked at French culinary art and how her work inspired a frustrated clerical employee to cook every single dish from the legendary Mastering the Art of French Cooking and blog about it. Oscillating between the '60s and 2002, the story tells us the parallel tales of these two wonderful womenu00a0- Julia Child, the cook (Streep) and Julie (Adams) who follows her work. Apart from cuisine, cooking and cutlery, the movie is more about finding your groove, falling in love and keeping it real.

What's hot: There are actors and then there's Meryl Streep. One could go on and on about this multi-faceted performer and how every character she approaches is brought to life with ease and splendor. However, the Meryl playing Julia Child is taller, broader, loud, at times obnoxious, but never a drag or a bore. Working on the mannerisms of the real Julia Child and her body language, Streep gives yet another performance that calls for a toast to one of the greatest living actors. Watching her sigh, scream out in despair, or plant a soggy kiss on her husband's lips is a delight as much as seeing her bake a cake or knead the dough. Surely she's done enough research and taken French cooking classes to know her artichokes from her broccoli. Amy Adams is delightfully restrained and subtle as Julie who worships Julia's every word and treats her book as the Bible. Nora Ephron who's the guru of mush and romance keeps it toned down and works more on characters than the plot. Tucci and Streep's chemistry is brilliant.u00a0

What's not: You got to be patient with this one. Ephron takes time to mash up the ingredients and then wait till the right time comes to let the drama begin. Also, she's done a better job telling us Julia's story than he does of Julie's. Since Julia is the inspiration to Julie, the latter suffers in being able to develop into a much more interesting character to the audience. Also, if you are repulsed by the idea of stepping into the kitchen or watch any cook then this dish won't fill you up.u00a0

What to do: J&J is like a frothy cup of cappuccino, leaving you satisfied yet yearning for another round. This ain't no coffee shot, so if you are patient to let the delicious performance of Streep and the funny experiences of Adams work on you, then this one is a definite recco!
