Ever since he first began singing for Bollywood, Benny Dayal has rendered some of the most memorable tracks in cinema, including Cocktail's (2012) Daru Desi, and more recently, Ude Dil Befikre, from Befikre (2016). It's surprising then that the singer hasn't had any big releases this year. "I want to invest in myself," Dayal tells mid-day, pointing out that he has been focusing on independent music. Ahead of the release of his extended play record, he talks about his singles and his dream of working with Vishal Bhardwaj.
Tell us about the singles you've made.
The best part about working on singles is that one can give a 100 per cent to every track. I get to write, produce, sing, record and shoot each song. That's a learning experience. I've created almost 15 singles, which I have been working on for two years.
Do you plan to release an album?
I'm planning to come up with a trilingual EP with my band, Funktuation. They will also release in the form of singles.
You've kept a low profile in Bollywood this year. Why?
I like to be the underdog. It's a choice that I've made since day one. Being high profile doesn't fetch you more work.
Which Bollywood actor do you think your voice suits the most?
Ranveer Singh. He's quirky and spontaneous.
What's your take on actors turning singers?
I wish them all the best. I consider myself amateur. So, we're in the same boat. It's fine for people to explore different talents.
Which composer do you wish to collaborate with?
Vishal Bhardwaj. I have great respect for him. People think I'm advertising my desire to work with him, but I'm just in awe of his work.
