Barfi! joins elite Rs 100 crore club

Team Barfi! seems set to overdose on a sugar rush. After being is chosen as India’s official entry for the Oscars in the Foreign Language Film category, it has now joined the Rs 100 crore club, albeit, based on worldwide box office returns.

The Anurag Basu-directed film, which collected around Rs 32.5 crore in its first weekend in India, has now grossed Rs 100 crore in just 10 days since its release on September 14.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh on Monday tweeted: "Barfi has grossed 100 cr *worldwide* in 10 days."

In India, it has collected around Rs 75 crore till date and the Oscar nomination is expected to boost box office collections and help it cross the Rs 100 crore mark nationally.

Discussing Barfi’s national collections, Adarsh tweeted, “Barfi collected Rs 17.1 cr net in Wknd (weekend) 2, taking the 10-day total to Rs 75.7 cr net. Breakup: Fri 4.1 cr, Sat 6 cr, Sun 7 cr. Superb!”

The 100-crore group is a very elite club that includes only three films released this year, excluding Barfi! – ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, ‘Bol Bachchan’ and ‘Rowdy Rathore’. The Ranbir Kapoor-starrer opened with at around 650 screens.

The heart-warming movie beat 19 other films, including Paan Singh Tomar and Kahaani, to be selected as India's official entry for the 85th Academy Awards to be held in February, 2013.

'Barfi!' is a moving tale of love between a deaf and mute boy Murphy, played by Ranbir Kapoor, and an autistic girl Jhilmil, essayed effortlessly by the National award-winning Priyanka Chopra. Southern actress Ileana D'Cruz, who has made her Bollywood debut with the movie, has plays a pivotal role in the film.

Interestingly, the director of the film had earlier in an interview stated that it was more important for him to touch a hundred hearts than Rs 100 crore box-office takings.

"I don't know about making Rs 100 crore. But I feel it is more difficult to touch people's heart. From my film, I only want to touch hundreds or thousands of hearts and that's all that matters to me. Collection is not important for me," Basu had said in the interview.
