The world seems grey with Jehangir Sabavala gone. CS tells you more about the colourful life of the artist who passed away on Friday at the age of 89: 
>>u00a0Born in Mumbai in 1922, Sabavala received his diploma from the J J School of Art in 1944. He then went on to study at all the prestigious institutions of the world including the Heatherley School of Art in London, the Academic Andre Lhote in Paris among others.
>>u00a0Sabavala's career spanned over sixty years since his first solo exhibition held in a hired room of the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai, put up with the help of fellow artist M F Husain and a couple of carpenters.
>>u00a0He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1977.
>>u00a0Sabavala worked most often with oils, creating landscapes, seascapes and figures deftly with his brush. He'd recently begun to paint cityscapes as well.
>>u00a0Describing his palette as quiet, this modern Indian artist said that veiled light and middle-tones appealed to him much more than pure colours and loud imagery.
>>u00a0Recently, his painting titled The Casuarina Line, sold for a record-breaking Rs 1.7 crore at an auction.
