From 'Mr. India' to 'Mr. X': Cinema's fascination with the 'invisible man' continues

Isn't it fascinating when someone tells you that you can see something that's invisible? It is this bait that filmmakers use to keep the audience hooked on to their stories on screen. And director Vikram Bhatt, too, plays up the disappearing act by giving us an invisible hero in Emraan Hashmi with his latest release 'Mr. X'.

As the sci-fi thriller 'Mr. X' hits the theatres, we bring you a list of seven films featuring characters with invisibility powers. Wouldn't you want to be in their shoes?

1. 'Mr. X' (2015)

This 3D sci-fi revenge drama tells the story of Raghuram Rathod (Emraan Hashmi), who gains the power of invisibility and turns a vigilante to avenge those who have wronged him. Emraan stays true to his serial kisser image and his invisible avatar indulges in a liplock with co-star Amyra Dastur in the film.

Shekhar Kapur's sci-fi family entertainer, 'Mr. India', remains to be a cult classic. The film not only gave us a memorable invisible hero in Anil Kapoor, but also a remarkable villain in Amrish Puri. And his quote, “Mogambo khush hua”, always found a way into conversations with friends and family.

3. 'Gayab' (2004)

Frustrated of being ignored and made fun of, Vishnu Prasad Singh (Tusshar Kapoor) wishes to disappear. And just when you thought the almighty doesn't pay heed to your needs, his wish gets granted! The film further revolves around his attempts to win over the only spark in his life, his ladylove Mohini (Antara Mali).

4. 'Mr. X in Bombay' (1964)

When Kishore Kumar's character, Sudarshan, drinks a potion and tries to kill himself on being rejected by his love interest, he becomes invisible!

5. 'Hollow Man' (2000)

Inspired by HG Wells' novel 'The Invisible Man', this film revolves around a scientist, played by Kevin Bacon, who becomes invisible with the help of a serum and goes on a killing spree, taking advantage of his invisibility. It was nominated for an Oscar for Visual Effects, but lost to 'Gladiator'.

6. 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' (2003)

This superhero action film, set in the late 19th century, is loosely based on the comic book series 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill. Amidst the plethora of unique individuals known as the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, is the invisible thief Rodney Skinner, played by Tony Curran.

7. 'Hotel Transylvania' (2012)

This 3D computer-animated fantasy comedy film tells the story of Count Dracula, the owner of Hotel Transylvania, a place where the world's monsters take rest from human civilization. David Spade voices the character of Griffin, the invisible man, and among Dracula's friends who enter the hotel.

The list doesn't end here. Cinema has had many more invisible heroes such as Ashok Kumar in 'Mr. X' (1957), Claude Rains in 'The Invisible Man' (1933) and Chevy Chase in 'Memoirs of an Invisible Man'. And the cinematic experiments with invisibility will, in all probability, continue further as we wait with bated breath for the next disappearing act to unravel on screen.
