From Mountains to Metropolises: The Spiritual Odyssey of Guruji Amit Maharaj

Guruji Amit Maharaj

Guruji Amit Maharaj, the spiritual luminary who reportedly travels so often he has breakfast in Dubai, lunch in Egypt, and dinner in Turkey, and carries a waiting of 12 months for those seeking an audience with him. With a patronage that includes business tycoons, celebrities, politicians, hoteliers, bankers, and people from the shipping, automation, and aviation industry, it's clear that Guruji's influence transcends borders. My curiosity as a journalist was piqued what makes this man so sought after, and why do people from all walks of life seek his guidance? Fortunately, I was able to catch him for a quick interview while he was on a brief visit to Mumbai.

When I spoke to them, his devotees referred to him as a “spiritual bodyguard”, there to protect and look after, not impose. They also proudly proclaimed his fluency in several languages, including Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Gujarati, Portuguese, Spanish and Swahili. An active traveler, he had already been to more than 120 countries. I was beginning to understand what made him so pervasive in such a diverse international audience.

From the moment I met Guruji, it was evident that he breaks the mold of what one might expect from a spiritual guide. Far from the traditional image of a reclusive ascetic, Guruji Amit Maharaj is vibrant and charismatic.  He greeted me with a warm smile and an easy-going demeanor that made me momentarily forget I was here to conduct an interview. Talking to him felt more like a conversation with an old friend. When I expressed my reservations to being dictated to by godmen, he said with a chuckle, "I’m not here to dictate anyone’s life. I’m just here to offer a perspective and help people find their own paths."

His teachings draw from a rich tapestry of knowledge, having 7 generations of asceticism in his family before him, and spending 12 years in the Himalayas inheriting it. With three PhDs and degrees in astrology, vastu, feng shui, aura reading, chakra balancing, meditation, face reading, and palmistry, Guruji offers insights that resonate deeply with those who consult him. But despite his vast knowledge, he remains grounded, always emphasizing the importance of personal experience over abstract theory.

Guruji's lifestyle might surprise those accustomed to more traditional spiritual figures. His followers have affectionately dubbed him the "Flying Guruji" due to his jet-setting lifestyle, which sees him flying around the globe to meet clients and hold consultations. "I love meeting people from different cultures," he says. "It enriches my understanding of the world and deepens my empathy."

This global perspective is perhaps one of the reasons why he has become so popular among the world's elite. "I don’t judge," he asserts. "I offer discretion and a safe space for people to share their worries and seek guidance without fear of criticism."

What sets Guruji apart is his ability to provide personal attention to each individual he meets. "When you’re with me, you have my full attention," he says. This focus is palpable; during our conversation, it felt as though the world around us had faded away, leaving just the two of us. I see now that it's this level of attentiveness and care that has earned him the trust and loyalty of his followers.

Despite his fame and busy schedule, Guruji ensures that every interaction is meaningful. He listens intently, often offering anecdotes from his own life to illustrate his points. His stories are filled with humor, wisdom, and a deep understanding of human nature. "Life is full of ups and downs," he reflects. "The key is not to get lost in the noise but to find your own rhythm."

By the end of our interview, I understood why so many people are drawn to Guruji Amit Maharaj. In a world that often feels chaotic and disconnected, he offers a sense of calm and clarity. He is a guide, a confidant, and company on a harsh journey. His approach is rooted in compassion and understanding, making him a refreshing presence in the often rigid world of spirituality.

As I bid him farewell, I felt a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper appreciation for the journey of self-discovery. Guruji Amit Maharaj is not just a spiritual leader; he is a beacon for those seeking meaning in an increasingly complex world. His wisdom, warmth, and worldly perspective make him a unique figure a modern Guruji for a modern world.

For those fortunate enough to meet him, Guruji offers more than just guidance; he offers a glimpse into a life lived with intention and authenticity. And in today’s fast-paced world, that is something truly rare and precious.
