From Delhi to Huron: My journey of growth and opportunity in Canada

Muskaan Guglani

Hi, I am Muskaan Guglani. At 18, I left the familiar surroundings of Delhi to begin my undergraduate journey at Huron University, just as the world was emerging from the pandemic-induced shutdown. I arrived at Pearson Airport, jet-lagged and somewhat disoriented. Since then, I have been fortunate to experience a continuous upward trajectory. Huron has exceeded my expectations in every way. Inspired by my positive experiences, my sister also decided to enroll at Huron two years after my arrival.

While I sought the comfort of familiarity by mingling with fellow Indian students, I also immersed myself in building relationships with domestic and other international students. I believe the cultural learning gleaned from an international education is as important as the in-class academic learning. Since Canada is a cultural mosaic, there is no better country in the world to provide exposure to other cultures.

The supportive faculty at Huron enabled me to adapt to the Canadian method of teaching - where rationale and discussion are emphasized over rote learning. Engaging in extracurricular activities is another component of the learning experience in university and I was sure to seek out opportunities. I found my footing in joining the Huron Indian Cultural Association (HICA), the largest social club on campus. I started at the grassroots level and was elected President of HICA in my 3rd year. This experience provided opportunities to develop leadership potential and engage in the art of persuasion to source funding to organize major events such as celebrations for Diwali and Holi.

Besides being economically rewarding, working part-time during the school year also provides valuable experience, serving as another component of education. I followed two concurrent paths in this context.

As a Brand Ambassador and International Strategic Recruitment Intern for Huron, I represented the university globally and spoke to prospective students, led recruitment events and interactive campus tours, hosted an in-person recruitment drive representing Huron at a university fair in Delhi, and delivered presentations to school counsellors at a Huron recruitment event in Mumbai.

As an Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation (E&SI) Programming Intern, I co-managed on-campus bootcamps on E&SI plus a five-day bootcamp on Design Thinking and Innovation for high school students in Mumbai. In addition, I planned, coordinated and co-managed a few comprehensive cultural and academic visits to Dubai for a group of twenty students.

The experience gained from summer internships is another crucial component of my overall education. I actively sought out internships each summer, gaining experience in various sectors related to marketing, my field of study. These sectors included consumer packaged goods, technology startups, food and beverage, travel, consulting, and telecom/digital services.

Reflecting on my journey, Huron has been the ideal university for nurturing my academic and personal growth, while Canada has provided a supportive and enriching environment. Together, they have allowed me to pursue and achieve my dreams, transforming that once-jet-lagged 18-year-old into a confident and capable individual ready to take on the world.
