A hydrated body will find it easy to pass the stool as water softens the stool,  reducing the strain on rectal veins. Dehydration is often linked to constipation, which is a reason for the development of piles. That’s why drinking 6-8 glasses per day is suggested.

Dr. Mukesh Kota also adds, “ It is highly recommended that people who face difficulty in passing stool add a high-fibre diet. Eating fibre-rich foods like legumes, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains helps soften stool. This is because such food helps absorb water, increases the volume of stool, and reduces pressure. Therefore, an intake of 14 grams per 1000 calories is recommended. Also, limit the intake of spicy food as it can irritate the digestive system, leading to burning, discomfort, and irritating the piles.”

Consumption of alcohol and smoking are the biggest foe of piles. Smoking can constrict the blood vessels, which can aggravate haemorrhoids. On the other hand, overconsumption of alcohol can lead to dehydration, which in turn can harden the stool, causing haemorrhoids. Therefore, a limited consumption of both can protect gut health and help with preventing piles.
