Mumbai may be the natural destination for anyone born in Maharashtra and interested in building a career in filmmaking, but Harsh Pundit ventured further, to study & practice it in New York City. Harsh Pundit is a pseudonym held by Harshal Alurkar, since a decade, as a tribute to his ancestors, and as an attempt to bring attention to the multi-layered,multi-form identity that his oeuvre showcases.
Boasting of more than 15 awards at national & international film festivals, and about 30 official selections across four out of the seven continents, Pundit has produced films of an astounding diversity of genre. From writing & directing the award-winning1-minute surreal short Wake Up Call to filming & editing the experimental visual symphony ELEMENTAL to producing the feature-length, independent social documentary AJAAT (Casteless), the only commonality in Pundit’s films seems to be his emphasis upon underrepresented & unconventional elements of the society as well as that of filmmaking.

Pundit acquired a Master of Arts degree in Media Studies from The New School in New York in May 2020 and his exemplary contribution to the university’s student body was honored with a Student Service Award upon his graduation. He also quickly became a preferred collaborator with internationally reputed artistic institutions such as New York Film Festival, Brooklyn Museum and La MaMaExperimental Theatre Club, for their Video production needs. Pundit also took upon Film Programming responsibilities for prestigious film festivals such as 45th Asian American International Film Festival and Slamdance Film Festival, and served on the judging committee at the International Film Festival hosted by Carnegie Mellon University.
Pundit now holds a managerial position at the National Film Development Corporation of India. The corporation, known as NFDC, is the central agency established by the Government of India to encourage the good cinema movement in the country. The primary goal of the NFDC is to plan, promote and organize an integrated and efficient development of the Indian film industry and foster excellence in cinema. NFDC being a Pioneer of Indian parallel cinema, produced over 300 films with globally acclaimed filmmakers such as Satyajit Ray, Shyam Benegal, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Mani Kaul, Kumar Shahani, Ketan Mehta, etc. Pundit brings his immensely versatile experience in Film & Video production to NFDC’s film world.
