Having worked on subjects like underbelly of socialites, dance to bars, and the fashion industry, Bhandarkar now turns his focus on the booming business of bouncers in metros and its supply chain in villages.
Here are some answers that bring out more details about the film.
Q) What is the film Bubbly Bouncer all about?
The film narrates the story of a small-town girl called Babli, enacted by Tamannaah Bhatia, who moves from her isolated village of AsolaFatepur to the bustling city of Delhi in pursuit of finding a career for herself. Babli is a distinguished personality and has gained popularity because her physique, which allows her to intimidate most of the men at her local outdoor gym. She decides that her career path will be to become a bouncer for a high-brow establishment. The Film explores various facets of the profession, which is usually dominated by men and brings out to you a story stirring in change in the society!
Q) What made you pick up this film?
I felt I wanted to showcase a world of bouncers. It’s an interesting world about how these people come from their villages. On top of that, after the first pandemic hit us so badly, I felt we really need a comedy film that people can watch with their family. I wanted to make a comedy, slice-of-life film.
Q) What makes you ( Madhur Bhandarkar) works on films that throw light on subjects that are so ‘hard Hitting’?
I feel the kind of subjects that one creates are different from the usual works. I usually love to research, interact with people, study different genres and that refills my creative juices and makes me comes across subjects that need attention. I try my best managing to make a rare concoction of films where the man on the streets could identify with my cinema. The niche I created with my kind of cinema created a genre in itself. Cinema is a work of fiction. All I do is portray a reflection of real life on screen and my portrayal is less harsh than what really happens.
Q) What made you think of Tamannaah Bhatia as Babli Bouncer?
Tamannaah wants to explore subjects and is very hard working. She’s immensely talented. I hadn’t seen any of her work before casting her in Babli Bouncer. I had only seen Baahubali but that was long time back…When I look at a person [actor], I look for the character. So, when she came, I thought she was the perfect one to play Babli
Q) You’ve given films that are so realistic, what next for audiences expect from you?
Well, one is thankful to all those who have appreciated my craft. The topic of my next film revolves around the Lockdown in India, during the pandemic. The film will be released over the next few months, it includes the stories of migrant workers forced to trudge back home after cities shut down, sex workers pushed further to the margins, a man trying to reach his pregnant daughter and much to the film.
Madhur Bhandarkar is the recipient of the National award and has been nominated many times for films like Chandni Bar, Traffic Signal, Fashion, and Page 3. He’s also honored with a Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honor.
Here’s wishing him all the best.
