With its newly launched, primarily egg-centric breakfast menu, a new Bandra burger joint seeks to rev up your lazy summer mornings

The political egg

As far as we're concerned, in the oft-fought battle of the cooked versus assembled breakfast, the latter most often trumps the former. More so in these recent, super sultry mornings when the thought of a bowl of cold yogurt topped with diced fruit is all we can entertain at 8 am.

Not being an early riser, the idea of stepping into the kitchen at dawn, and navigating our way around pans, stovetops and toasters is enough to send us scurrying back to the comfort of a frigid bedroom. Luckily for us, on those rare days when we pay heed to the call of a runny fried egg or a fluffy buttermilk pancake, we're never too far away from indulging our cravings because most neighbourhoods boast of cafes offering plenty of breakfast specials. The latest to join the fray is the popular burger joint Frisbees. While only available at its Bandra outlet (the Shivaji Park outlet is delivery-only) in the mornings for dine-in, one can also have the entire menu delivered home almost anywhere in the city.

Canadian buttermilk pancakes

We put this hybridity to the test and call for a few items home, while leaving a few to be sampled as we dine in. Housed along a narrow lane in Bandra's Chimbai neighbourhood, the smallish space exudes a casual vibe with the done-to-death exposed brickwork and naked, suspended Edison bulbs juxtaposed with wooden tables and a cheery yellow accent wall. This is almost the exact same shade of yellow of the egg yolk we see as part of our first order of the political egg (Rs 180). A clever, super value-for-money homage to the popular eggs Kejriwal, this one sees a fried egg sitting atop a spicy cheese-laden, in-house brioche bread slab, doused in hot sauce (in lieu of the finely chopped green chillies of a traditional Kejriwal). Though accompanied by herbed fries, one can also have this with a side of chicken sausage at no extra cost, we're informed.

Kronos omelette

This same generosity is evident in our plump-bellied kronos omelette (Rs 330). Here, a three-egg fluffy omelette is stuffed with chicken sausage and grilled chicken strips, along with caramelised onions, BBQ sauce and a cheese duo of cheddar and parmesan. It's served with a side of brioche toast points and a pot of clarified butter for a twist.

A pot of slightly salty, refreshing kahwa green tea (Rs s160) - that's enough for two generous pours - provides the perfect astringent foil to all our ‘eggstravagance'. On cue, our next order is that of the all-vegetarian, Canadian style buttermilk pancakes (Rs 320) that travels well. Perfectly fluffy and tasty, our duo of pancakes comes with a side of blueberry compôte, maple syrup and condensed milk.

Speaking of condensed milk, having just gotten back from South East Asia's coffee capital, Vietnam, our caffeine antenna is on high alert, as we sip our iced Vietnamese coffee (Rs 200); it's sweetened and creamed with the beloved condensed milk. Our French vanilla flavoured one made in collaboration with Sleepy Owl Coffee is spot on and exactly how a good café sua da should be.

Vietnamese iced coffee

As a parting shot, we also call in for Frisbees's version of the de rigueur avo toast. This iteration topped with Mexican minced lamb (Rs 390) and a runny fried egg lacks any such perceptible ‘Mexican' notes. But it more than makes up for this with the spicy mincemeat (that's more kheema-like) which works with the cooling mashed avocado and piquant pico de gallo, atop yet another slab of crunchy brioche toast.
