The Ajit Agarkar-headed selection committee is set to make Suryakumar Yadav the captain for Mumbai's Ranji Trophy opener against Madhya Pradesh at Indore from October 14 as regular skipper Aditya Tare has yet to fully recover from a knee injury.

mid-day has learnt that the selectors are contemplating to reappoint Yadav till the time Tare recuperates from his injury. Yadav, who is the vice-captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, had a controversial stint as Mumbai Ranji captain in 2015 and was replaced in the middle of their campaign with Tare.
"Surya seems to be the logical choice given that he has captained in the past. The selectors, though, will also discuss other names when they meet, but at the moment, it looks like Surya will get the job," an MCA source told mid-day.
The Mumbai team will reach Indore on October 11, four days prior to their Ranji opener at the Holkar Stadium. It is learnt that senior pro Abhishek Nayar is also in the reckoning for the skipper's post, but it is learnt that not many are in favour of appointing the senior all-rounder.
Nayar was Mumbai's saviour last season with several crucial knocks and bowling spells that helped the team reached the final. Nayar also enjoys a good rapport with the youngsters in the team.
Another concern for the Ranji Trophy finalists is the pace bowling department. While key pacers Dhawal Kulkarni and Balwinder Singh Sandhu Jr are injured for the opening clash, Mumbai will also miss the services of Shardul Thakur, who will be away on the India 'A' duty. Looking at the scenario, the 41-time champions won't start as clear favourites for the opener against MP.
