Her claim came undone after a medical examination, when doctors found only small injuries to her chest. She had claimed that a scalding chemical had been flung at her body during the assault. The doctors apprised the police of it, who then questioned the woman and her 14-year-old daughter separately. The woman had alleged that during the attack, the men had tied up her daughter.
Their differing statements on the size and the colour of the bottle containing the alleged chemical gave them away.
Three of the six men were arrested yesterday from Kalaburagi in Karnataka. A police officer said it was close to impossible for them to have committed the crime on Sunday night and get to Kalaburagi in that short period.
"The woman confessed that she had levelled false allegations over a dispute the men had with her husband. One of the accused men, Vyanktesh Reddy, had molested her five years ago. In revenge, the woman's husband flung acid at Reddy's wife. He was arrested for the crime and released only a few weeks ago," the officer said. "They hatched another plot to exact revenge for it and made the false rape allegations."
